Remote Education Proviison: Information for Parents

Remote education provision: information for parents
January 2021
This information is intended to provide clarity and transparency to pupils and parents or carers about what to expect from remote education when local restrictions require the entire school (or bubbles) to remain at home.
For details of what to expect where individual pupils are self-isolating, please see the final section of this page and the Home Learning Policy Statement
The remote curriculum: what is taught to pupils at home
To begin with, the first day or two of a child being educated remotely might look different from our standard approach, while we take all necessary actions to prepare for a longer period of remote teaching.
What should my child expect from immediate remote education in the first day or two of pupils being sent home?
We have put together home-learning packs and these are ready for collection from school.
Every child will receive:
• several learning books (which we call their CGP books as this is the name of the publisher) – for most there is a Reading comprehension book, a GPS targeted question book and a Maths targeted study and question book. YR children have something slightly different.
• KIRF Maths homework exercise book,
• a Home Learning exercise book.
• a Reading book(s)
• Spelling lists
• links for online resources listed on the school website
Following the first few days of remote education, will my child be taught broadly the same curriculum as they would if they were in school?
• We plan to teach the same curriculum remotely as we do in school wherever possible and appropriate. However, we have needed to make some adaptations in some subjects.
• Reading (20 mins daily) = Reading aloud and sharing books together will help your reading improve. Please use your school home reading books or your own books to read every day. Pupils in KS2 can now quiz at home using Accelerated Reader. Year 1 - 6 s can also use the CGP books sent home to practice skills.
• Phonics (Year R, 1 & 2, 10 mins daily) = The homework pack has phonics information to support home learning. Children can also access free games on phonicsplay.co.uk to practise phases 3-5
• Spelling (Year 2, 3, 4, 5, & 6, 10 mins daily) = Spelling Shed assignments refresh weekly and are linked to the homework pack spelling sheets.
• Writing = Practising writing is important. You can practise your handwriting by copying out writing from a book. In the event of a lengthy lockdown units of work adapted from Pathways to Write will be used.
• Grammar and Punctuation (Year 2, 3, 4, 5, & 6, 10 mins daily) - the CGP books sent home are used to practice skills.
• Maths Number Facts (20 mins daily) = You can use NumberGym Bond Builder, Table Trainer and/or Mental Maths Challenge in addition to Maths Shed for number facts practice as well as completing the homework pack KIRFs sheets.
• Maths Mastery (40 mins daily) = Year 1 - 6 s can use the CGP books sent home to practice skills. In addition children can watch the White Rose Maths home learning videos and accompanying activities
• Geography - use the Oddizzi home learning weekly resource
• Science – adapted knowledge and understanding skills from school scheme
• French – vocabulary and sentence level
• Art/DT – activities adapted to suit the home environment and resources available
Remote teaching and study time each day
How long can I expect work set by the school to take my child each day?
We expect that remote education (including remote teaching and independent work) will take pupils broadly the following number of hours each day:
Primary school-aged pupils Key Stage 1:
3 hours a day on average across the cohort, with less for younger children
Primary school-aged pupils Key Stage 2:
4 hours a day on average across the cohort, with less for younger children

Accessing remote education
How will my child access any online remote education you are providing?
The following resources can be accesses through the internet using a laptop, iPad or smartphone:
Parent’s Email Websites with school subscription…
Purple Mash
NumberGym Bond Builder
NumberGym Table Trainer
NumberGym Mental Maths Challenge
Spelling Shed Math Shed
Oddizzi
Accelerated Reader
Personalized secure school logins are required for all of these resources.
If my child does not have digital or online access at home, how will you support them to access remote education?
We recognise that some pupils may not have suitable online access at home. We take the following approaches to support those pupils to access remote education:
• Pupils who have been identified as ‘vulnerable’ have been issued a laptop -
• If families do not have digital or online access at home, parents or carers can inquire at the school for availability
• Children will be sent weekly packs of work that will include 3 daily activities.
• The learning tasks will mirror the activities online as closely as possible.
• Daily reading with parents will be encouraged - parents can post evidence instead of signing diaries.
• Children can submit work to their teachers by post or return them to school be some other means
How will my child be taught remotely?
We use a combination of the following approaches to teach pupils remotely:
Some examples of remote teaching approaches:
• printed paper packs produced by teachers (e.g. workbooks, worksheets)
• textbooks and reading books pupils have at home CGP Targeted Question Books
• commercially available websites supporting the teaching of specific subjects or areas, including video clips or sequences (e.g. White Rose Maths, Oddizzi Geography Purple Mash, NumberGym Bond Builder, NumberGym Table Trainer, NumberGym Mental Maths Challenge, Spelling Shed, Math Shed, Accelerated Reader)

Engagement and feedback
What are your expectations for my child’s engagement and the support that we as parents and carers should provide at home?
What we need you to do:
• Collect the home-learning packs from school if possible (we can deliver in exceptional circum-stances)
• Inform the school office via admin@corvedaleprimary.co.uk or telephoning 01584 841630 if you’ve recently changed your contact details
• Check daily and acknowledge receipt of your emails as this will be the main line of communication
• Make sure your child completes each home learning task within the set time
• Stay at home and stay safe
We will try to call you occasionally to see how you are but if you need to speak to us in between times remember we will still be here at school during the usual hours.
How will you check whether my child is engaging with their work and how will I be informed if there are concerns?
• Check daily and acknowledge receipt of your emails as this will be the main line of communication
• Find time to check the tasks the children have completed and let us know of anything they’ve found tricky that we may need to cover again.
• Certain task could be photographed and emailed back so we can see how they’re getting on.
We will try to call you occasionally to see how you are but if you need to speak to us in between times remember we will still be here at school during the usual hours.
How will you assess my child’s work and progress?
Feedback can take many forms and won’t mean extensive written comments for individual children.
Our approach to feeding back on pupil work is as follows:
• Children (with parents help) can use the answers section at the back of the CGP Reading, GPS and Maths books to self-mark tasks and let us know of anything they’ve found tricky that we may need to cover again
• Daily email from teachers will contain general whole-class feedback (We will call you to give verbal feedback if required)
Additional support for pupils with particular needs
How will you work with me to help my child who needs additional support from adults at home to access remote education?
We recognise that some pupils, for example some pupils with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND), may not be able to access remote education without support from adults at home. We acknowledge the difficulties this may place on families, and we will work with parents and carers to support those pupils in the following ways:

Delivering remote education for pupils with SEND will involve daily email from teachers. Some lessons will be differentiated to account for SEND Expectations will remain high, but we accept that children may not be able to complete all tasks.
• We will try to call weekly to see how you are but if you need to speak to us in between times remember we will still be here at school during the usual hours.
• Delivering remote education for our younger pupils, for example those in reception and year 1
• Emphasis on developing phonics, early reading and early number skills
• Practical activities and games suitable for the home environment
• Links to age-appropriate online learning sites, for example, BBC Phonics page, CBeebies
